Meet the Instructors: Spring 2023

Throughout the year, Cheekwood holds a variety of adult workshops related to art and horticulture to provide exciting, unique. hands-on opportunities for participants over the age of 18. With the help of our wonderful instructors, we strive to provide participants with the skills and materials needed to learn something new in a relatively short period of time, whether it be painting, floral arrangement, working with organic dyes, calligraphy, etc.

All our instructors are local artists and teachers who are interested in adding teaching experiences to their repertoire as well as sharing their skillset with new audiences.

Here, we’d like to take an opportunity to highlight our instructors from the 2023 Cheekwood in Bloom season, and give a little more detail about their backgrounds as artists and experts in their fields.

Her summer love is antique and heirloom roses but what to do during winter?
Susan field plants and indoor forces thousands of cut tulips and heirloom daffodils for florists in addition to her own personal stash.

Susan is a licensed attorney and in her spare time holds down a job and runs a skincare business focused on the healing properties of her roses. You may find her at www.restorationrose.com and her specialty bulb shop at www.restorationrosefarm.com

Jammie-Williams

Jammie Williams

I am a painter, sculptor and daydreamer. My works are inspired by my personal memories, feelings, and emotions. My subjects are people, animals and symbols used to create moods, the expression of dreams, wonder and renewal by forming personal myths and narratives.

Since 2014 I have sculpted the portrait reliefs for the annual Country Music Hall of Fame induction plaques. Currently 33 portraits for 26 plaques.

Serving for three years as in-house artist for contemporary arts center OZ Arts Nashville allowed me the wonderful opportunity to create over 100 personal paintings and collaborate on over 400 additional works including paintings and sculptures in various techniques, styles and materials including abstract and conceptual.

My exhibition history includes the Huntsville Museum of Art, the University of Southern Mississippi Museum of Art and the Nashville Airport Flying solo exhibition series.

I’ve taught classes and workshops through Watkins College of Art, The Renaissance Center, Tennessee Craft, Oz Arts Nashville and the Belmont /Watkins campus.

Dani-Taylor

Dani Taylor

Dani is a self-taught watercolor artist. She began painting as a way to recover from a concussion after a serious car wreck in the summer of 2018. She loves being self-taught because she gets to learn outside of the traditional rules and paint what makes her happy, which is usually landscapes and trees as a throwback to family vacations spent in the Smokies and on the Blue Ridge Parkway. She loves teaching and seeing adult learners take a few hours for themselves in a busy world. Taking that time to shut out what needs to be done and just learn something new, is a gift. Her favorite classes to teach are plein air, and anything outside of the box where people get to be creative.

When not teaching, or working out of her studio in Germantown, she is probably planning her next travel adventure or getting coffee from a local shop.
@danitaylor615

Andrea-Silva

Andrea Silva

I am a graphic designer, artist, and illustrator pursuing a love for art that I’ve had since childhood. As a native Kansan, I now currently reside in Nashville, Tennessee. I graduated in 2010 with a BA in Graphic Design and minors in Painting and Music from Tabor College in Hillsboro, KS.

I was able to work as their graphic designer in house for 8 years and I continue on in that role remotely.

In 2019 I left my full-time position in the radio world to focus on my career as a graphic artist. Much of what I learned in sound design over the past decade has also carried over to the graphic design world, particularly as I continue growing my skills in motion design.

When I’m not behind my computer or at my easel creating you might find me outdoors exploring with my dear husband of 5 years (and counting) and my toddler. Life with them is full and rewarding.

Jennifer-Fleischer

Jennifer Fleischer – Ibu Textiles

My name is Jennifer and I’m a weaver and fiber artist based in Nashville. Weaving is my first love and I’m often seen experimenting on my floor and frame looms.  A little over a decade ago, I learned to weave at a small textile studio in Connecticut and immediately fell in love. I saved up and bought myself a floor loom whom I named Patsy. Working on everything from wall hangings to scarves, all of my work is made with natural materials that I carefully source.  I like to incorporate natural dyes, dried flowers and other natural elements such as driftwood into my art as well. You can often see me popping up at markets around town and teaching workshops as well. Working with Cheekwood, The Forge, Nashville Art Studios and more, I teach everything from weaving, macramé, needle felting and Indigo dyeing.  Originally from New York, I have made Nashville my home and love the community here. Hope to see you around town!

November Volunteer Spotlight

Jenny and Lilly joined Cheekwood’s Family Team program as volunteers in early 2021 and have been active ever since! Being able to provide an opportunity for parent and child to engage in service, is a truly meaningful experience, which carries with it learning, skill development and shared joy. Jenny and Lilly are welcoming and warm to our visitors and families, helping them create fond memories of their visit at Cheekwood. A parent or legal guardian and child aged 10-15 can apply to join our Family Team program. Applications and volunteer information are located at this link: https://cheekwood.site/support/volunteer/

Jenny-Lilly-Greeters-Blooms-2022-scaled-e1668532469854-640x503

Tell us a little about yourself, background
Jenny: I grew up in the Nashville area, we currently live in Franklin, TN. I’ve been married to my husband Joseph for 20 years and we have one daughter, Lilly. I have memories of coming to Cheekwood as a child to see the Christmas decorations and bringing my daughter to do art projects here as a preschooler.
Lilly: I was born in Nashville and I am a junior in high school.

What are your favorite hobbies, activities, or interests?
Jenny: Our family loves to travel. Lilly and I like to bake together and go to concerts.
Lilly: I really like listening to and playing music.

What is your favorite garden or area at Cheekwood and Why?
Jenny: I love the Children’s Garden. I think the statues are so whimsical and I love to see the families interacting with and enjoying that space.
Lilly: I like the Water Garden. It’s a great place to spend time.

Do you have a favorite art piece at Cheekwood, or, if not, a favorite exhibition that Cheekwood has hosted? Is there a reason you like it?
Jenny: I loved when the Chihuly exhibit, and the Holiday Lights exhibit overlapped a few years ago. That was so cool to see all the pieces lit up amid the holiday lights.
Lilly: I really liked the Colorscape exhibit this summer.

In what ways have you been involved as a volunteer with Cheekwood so far?
Jenny: We have volunteered as greeters, helped with the Easter Art Hop, Cheekwood Harvest in the pumpkin patch, and at Holiday Lights.

Why did you become a volunteer?
Jenny: We were looking for a place that Lilly and I could regularly volunteer together. We thought about all the places we love to visit that might need volunteers and Cheekwood came to mind. I visited the website and found out they have a family volunteer program, and it was a perfect fit for us.
Lilly: I wanted to find a place to volunteer outdoors, and Cheekwood’s gardens are a great place to do that.

What have you enjoyed the most about your volunteer experience?
Jenny: It’s been so nice to volunteer together, and that probably my favorite part. As your kids get older it can be a little harder to find activities to do together and spending time together volunteering at Cheekwood has been so great. Plus, it’s a lovely place to spend a few hours and everyone is so happy to be there.

Do you have any advice for individuals considering volunteering with Cheekwood?
Jenny: I would highly recommend it. Cheekwood’s Family Volunteer program is a great way to spend time with your family, show your children the importance of supporting their community, and you get to do all this while spending time at one of the most beautiful spots in Nashville.

Q&A with Mike McMath

Q&A with Mike McMath

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Martin Shallenberger Artist-in-Residence series, Cheekwood is proud to present the melodic work of artist Michael D. McMath as the Cheekwood artist resident of 2021.

McMath is an innovative painter taking much inspiration from ancient art practices. Over his career, McMath has completed countless murals, faux finishes, trompe l’oeil paintings and gold leaf projects commissioned across the United States. Working in the centuries old artform of Venetian plaster and encaustics, or hot wax painting, McMath has revived these ancient Greek and Roman techniques in the 21st century. The creative techniques he employs in each work require an air of freedom given the untamable nature of the medium. The method of encaustics takes control from the artist’s hands and creates lovely unforeseen results. McMath finds great joy in the aesthetic accidents produced by the medium, which in turn pays tribute to the unruly and innate beauty of nature. Receiving inspiration from horticultural surroundings and architecture, McMath is eager to discover endless sources of beauty that will inform his imagery from the bountiful environment throughout Cheekwood during his residency. Mike McMath will be creating onsite in Cheekwood’s second floor galleries through August 27 and an exhibition of his work will run through October 17.

AIR2-640x480

Where do you draw your inspiration for your artwork?

It’s a combination of “composition” and “the process”. Something has to catch my eye! Whether it’s something in nature, architectural or the human form, composition is key. Once I have passion for that image everything becomes about “the process”. I love the act of creating. There is a constant battle with the chosen medium to achieve the image in my mind.

How did you decide that you wanted to draw from ancient art practices?

I was drawn to Venetian plaster and encaustic because of their illusion of texture. Venetian with its many thin layers of color and skim coating appear to have great texture but in fact feel like polished stone. Encaustic had such depth simply by the colors melting together. That translucency is what drew me in.

How long have you been creating art and what made you start working in different mediums?

I have been creating works of art for as long as I can remember and loved graphite at an early age. It was in college that I started working with oils and other traditional mediums. It was after collage that I started a faux final company after seeing someone doing a marble effect. I didn’t know how it was done but I knew I could do better. I fell in love with the Venetian plaster effect we were putting on walls and was asked to paint a mural on the Venetian with Venetian. Encaustic intrigued me much the same as the marbling that I had seen years earlier. I didn’t know how it was done but I had to try it!

Why did you want to be this year’s Artist-in-Residence at Cheekwood?

It is very hard to make a living as an artist solely on your work and I see the AIR as a great opportunity to do just that.

What does Cheekwood provide to an artist that he/she might not find elsewhere?

Inspiration! The architecture and the natural surroundings are all I need to start “the process”.

Describe what the visitors will see when they see your work on display at Cheekwood.

My goal is to bring the outside in. Inspired by the architect’s original intent to create a synoptic balance of structure and landscape I intend on doing the same by filling the gallery space with color and texture.
