Calm on the Carell Trail: Forest Bathing

Wellness 360 Logo

Forest bathing is a guided, sense-based, and mindful way to be in nature. Taking place in a small area with certified Forest Therapy Guide, Sarah Champion, reintroduce yourself to the forest and other natural environments in ways that support authentic relationships. Based on the Japanese practice of “Shinrinyoku,” or “forest bathing,” we “bathe” in not only immune-boosting chemical compounds of nature, but also in the feeling of being present and connected.

Classes will meet at the Frist Learning Center Lawn and continue onto The Carell Trail, weather permitting. In the event of inclement weather, a Cheekwood representative will notify participants of class cancellation and refund or rescheduling options through the registration email provided. Please dress comfortably for the outdoors and bring your own water bottle. Class size is limited to 12 participants.

New Acquisition on the Sculpture Trail

Come celebrate the Tennessee Triennial for Contemporary Art with half-price admission to view the stunning new Elizabeth Turk installation in person on the Ann & Monroe Carell Jr. Family Sculpture Trail.

Elizabeth Turk
American, b. 1961

Red-cockaded Woodpecker, Golden-winged Warbler, and King Rail, 2023
Aluminum
Museum purchase
2022.2-4

Drawing inspiration from the songs of three endangered Tennessee birds: the Red-cockaded Woodpecker, the Golden-winged Warbler, and the King Rail, this sculptural grouping represents the birds through elegant, totemic sound columns. Turk frequently commemorates the calls of endangered and extinct birds in her work by using printouts of the sound waves they generate(d) during song. Working with recordings archived by the Macaulay Library of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Turk enlarges the sound wave images, reorients them from horizontal to vertical, and then painstakingly reproduces them in a variety of materials to manufacture her totems.
