Warhol–Wyeth: Portraits of Each Other

In January of 1977, Andy Warhol, the King of Pop, and Jamie Wyeth, Prince of Realism, exhibited their remarkable portraits of one another at Cheekwood in an exhibition celebrating the creative exchange between two artists from seemingly different worlds.

Now, fifty years later, Cheekwood revisits this landmark moment in its history, bringing these works together once more, alongside more recent portraits by Jamie Wyeth that offer a fresh perspective on this enduring artistic connection.

What began as an unlikely friendship grew into a remarkable artistic exchange. Spending time together at Warhol’s legendary Factory in New York, the two created portraits that challenged expectations of both artists’ work. Their collaboration spanned several years of creative dialogue, offering a rare glimpse into the worlds of two American artists who found inspiration in one another. Fifty years later, their portraits reunite at Cheekwood, bringing this extraordinary story full circle.

During her residency, Wright will explore Cheekwood’s decorative arts holdings—including the museum’s porcelain collection—as well as the gardens and historic architecture of the estate. Nature, botanical forms, and historical design references often inform her compositions, which combine sculptural ceramics with painted environments that evoke frescoed interiors and decorative wall treatments. Through this approach, Wright creates installations that consider the relationship between objects, ornament, and the spaces they inhabit.

Wright received her MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2018 and her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2013. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions across the United States and has been featured in Architectural Digest, Surface Magazine, Curbed, and Dwell, where her distinctive approach to contemporary ceramics and decorative form has drawn national attention.

The Artist-in-Residence program is made possible through the generous support of the Shallenberger family.
