Wonder Women: Women Printmakers of the 1970s

This exhibition features prints created in the 1970s by women who advocated for themselves and their work at a time when most galleries unfairly labeled them to be bad investments. Having entered the workforce on the heels of second-wave feminism, these women were uniquely situated to defy gravity. Just as Wonder Woman augmented the pantheon of superheroes, the women artists of the 1970s did the same for modern art as they fought for recognition in a male-dominated field. All 19 works on paper in this exhibition were pulled from Cheekwood’s permanent collection.

Selections from Cheekwood’s Permanent Collection on Display

Paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from Cheekwood’s permanent collection will take center stage throughout the second-floor galleries in the Mansion. Each gallery on the 2A floor will highlight a different sub-category of Cheekwood’s permanent art collection including American Impressionism, American Portraiture, and 20th century sculpture by William Edmondson. With this re-contextualization of the collection, visitors will have access to the majority of both the painting collection and William Edmonson sculpture collection for the first time in decades.

INTERVENTIONS: Ann Carrington

Her eccentric and elegant pieces breathe new life into otherwise mundane items such as knives, spoons, buttons, cans, and coins by unraveling their associations and assigning new meaning as sculpture.

British artist Ann Carrington is well-known for working with discarded and found objects to create ornate sculptures and works of art. Her eccentric and elegant pieces breathe new life into otherwise mundane items such as knives, spoons, buttons, cans, and coins by unraveling their associations and assigning new meaning as sculpture. Inspired by the gardens at Cheekwood and the Cheek family, Carrington’s installation will include 33 works throughout the period rooms.  Her work has recently been exhibited at the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny as part of the Flowers Forever exhibition, as well as at Kunsthalle Munich, one of Germany’s most prestigious exhibition houses.

Now in its third year, INTERVENTIONS is an arts initiative to activate the historic period rooms. The series invites renowned artists from around the globe to imagine and implement a connection between their contemporary work and the Cheekwood Mansion.

Cheekwood Debuts: The Masterpiece Art Series

Prepare to be enchanted this March with the debut of Cheekwood’s Masterpiece Art Series. This new series, dedicated to showing a single or small grouping of iconic, world-renowned masterworks, introduces its inaugural exhibition with a dancer sculpture, Etude de nu pour la danseuse habillée, by Edgar Degas. The bronze is a rare loan from the Marlene and Spencer Hays collection.

Closely related to Edgar Degas’ Little Dancer with tutu and satin hair ribbon, the Hays collection sculpture, standing over two feet tall, is a superb example of the artist’s most celebrated theme: the ballerina. The sculpture is a true masterpiece, depicting the young dancer’s grace and poise. Degas explored and exquisitely captured the movement of ballet, immortalizing the subject’s power and elegance.

Continuing Cheekwood’s long-standing tradition of bringing high-quality art to Nashville, The Masterpiece Art Series is a celebration of artistic brilliance. For an unparalleled art experience, see the Little Dancer on view in the Mansion galleries in conjunction with the special exhibition Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist.

Thomas Dambo

About the Artist

Born in Odense, Denmark in 1979, artist Thomas Dambo’s mission is to create art that inspires people to explore, have adventures in nature, and show that recycled goods can be turned into something beautiful.
