Doug Hollis
Doug Hollis (b. 1948) has always had a strong interest in Native American culture.  At age 12 he began to live with the Native Americans for periods of time.  He learned about the magic that nature produces.  From these experiences, Hollis received a unique worldview that strongly influenced his art.  In the 1960’s, he collaborated with musicians, dancers, filmmakers, engineers and physicists to create some of his first art.  He concentrated on natural phenomenon and structures that would respond to the environment.  In 1970, Hollis graduated from the University of Michigan with his BFA.  For the next decade, he explored new ways to artistically present landscape and the forces that are constantly effecting it.  This study led him to build his wind and water activated sound sculptures.  This fascination with the integration of sound, sight, and landscape led Hollis to create such well-known works as his 1983 “Sound Garden” in Seattle (the inspiration for an alternative rock band).
